The Board on Medicine, 1967-1970
The Board on Medicine was established by a motion of the NAS Council in June 1967. The Board, originally called the Board on Medicine & Public Health, was to serve as an advisory body that would “formulate recommendations on matters of policy related to medicine and public health.” The prehistory of the Board lay in discussions centering around the need for and desirability of establishing a National Academy of Medicine; what would eventually issue from the Board in 1970 wasn’t a National Academy of Medicine per se, but an Institute of Medicine under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences.
During its three year existence, the Board initiated or proposed studies in a number of fields, including medical education and the deliver of health care services to the disadvantaged. Perhaps the Board’s best-known product was a 1968 statement on cardiac transplantation in humans.
At the same time that the Board was pursuing its program efforts, it was also looking into the matter of what institutional form it ultimately should take. The end result was the formal establishment of the Institute of Medicine in December 1970.
