Welcome!
The State Science and Technology Policy initiative brings together state policymakers and science and technology experts in support of more effective state decision- and policy making. In October 2007, leaders from more than 40 organizations representing 21 states launched the initiative at a 2-day National Convocation.
News:
June 2008--The federal government plays the predominant role in supporting research and development (R&D) and in establishing public policies that affect science and technology (S&T) in the United States. However, the federal government is no longer the sole focus of R&D funding and S&T policy making. State and local policy makers are unquestionably making more and more decisions that affect all of us on a daily basis. Listen to the podcast of the recent Convocation addressing these issues.
May 2008--The National Science Foundation released the results of a new survey, conducted in cooperation with the Census Bureau, that examines state agency expenditures for research and development and R&D facilities. Expenditures of six states, Pennsylvania, California, New York, Michigan, Ohio, and Florida, accounted for 49% of all state-agency research and development.
February 2008--At the 2008 Annual Meeting of the AAAS, held in Boston, MA, the leadership of the National Association of Academies of Science (NAAS) passed a resolution to encourage its members to help build state science and technology support. Specifically, the resolution calls upon members "to establish state level coalitions or other mechanisms for S&T policy advice to local and state governments including governors, cabinet agencies and legislatures" and also "to reach out, cooperate with, and support existing policy mechanisms and organizations."
