Research Interests

I am interested in the origin, evolution, and structure of planets. This includes Earth and large satellites. My training in condensed matter physics and subsequent familiarity with fluid mechanics have enabled me to suggest answers to questions such as: What is the nature of layering and the origin of the heat flows of planets? Why do some planets have large magnetic fields while others do not? How did Earth's moon form? Do large icy satellites have water oceans? How does melt migrate and segregate within partially solid materials? What is the nature of Earth's core? What is the explanation for the remarkable diversity of the planets we know and what can we expect as our inventory of extrasolar planets develops?
