Research Interests

My research interests are in the fields of inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry, with concentration on synthesis, stereochemistry, electronic structure, and reactivity of compounds of the transition elements. In inorganic chemistry, the emphasis is on the synthesis of new metal cluster compounds, especially those of molybdenum, tungsten, rhenium, and iron, and elucidation of their properties. Specific interests in bioinorganic chemistry include all aspects of iron-sulfur biochemistry and of native metal clusters in proteins and enzymes. These studies include synthesis of representations of metal sites and metal clusters found in enzymes such as hydrogenase, nitrogenase, carbon monoxide dehydrogenase, sulfite reductase, and heme-copper oxygenases. Of current interest is the employment of designed peptides as supporting scaffolds for the synthesis and stabilization of complex metal assemblies in biology. Additionally, we are concerned with the fundamental chemistry of molybdenum and tungsten as related to the catalytic properties of these elements in biological oxidation-reduction reactions. An additional interest is in biosynthesis of metal clusters.
