Pablo Marquet is Professor of the Department of Ecology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and External Faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. Dr. Marquet is recognized for his work on macroecology, global change, and complex system science. He is known in particular for his work on scaling laws in ecological systems, the integration of theories in ecology, and the emergence evolution and consequences of social complexity.  Dr. Marquet was born in Santiago, Chile. He graduated from Universidad de Concepción with a degree in biology in 1987, and from the University of New Mexico in 1993 with a Ph.D. in Biology.  He returned to Chile with a postdoc at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and joined the faculty in 1994. He has been President of the Ecological Society of Chile and is a corresponding member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, international member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and The World Academy of Sciences.

Research Interests

Dr. Marquet´s current research is focused on the integration of simple models of ecological systems that can explain the emergence of patterns from genomes to ecological communities.  He is also carrying out theoretical research on the emergence of simple ecologies and on the conservation and role of ecological systems in changing the climate.
