We will discuss on a few case studies the biomimetic design of man-made surfaces inspired by structures occurring in Nature. Specifically, we will outline how the structure of leaves of plants has led to the design of non-wettable, self-cleaning, and antifouling surfaces. We will discuss how the hierarchical topography of surfaces inspired by gecko can promote adhesion. The effect of surface texture on color will also be addressed and documented on a few examples involving bird feathers and butterfly wings. Implications on the design of antireflective coatings will also be pointed out. Finally a few examples of super-strong materials based on natural spider fibers and muscle adhesives will be presented.
