How to Nominate

All nominations must be submitted online. Unless otherwise stated, preference will be given to scientists who may be earlier in their careers or those whose work has not been recognized by other prizes or awards.  The following materials must be submitted.

  1. A letter from the nominator describing the candidate's work and why he or she should be selected for the award. Nominators may not nominate individuals from their home institution. Campuses that are components of a large university system (e.g., UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco) are considered separate home institutions for this purpose. Nominators may not nominate or co-nominate individuals with an emotional relationship to the nominee (such as a near relative or current/former romantic partner), former students, or individuals with whom the nominator has a current or former formal mentoring relationship. No more than three (3) pages.
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. Bibliography listing no more than twelve (12) of the nominee's most significant publications.
  4. Suggested citationA 50-word summary stating why the nominee should be considered for this award. Citation examples»
  5. Two letters of supportNo more than one letter of support can be written by someone of the same primary work institution as the nominee.

  • 2025 Recipients Announced: Mid-January 2025

FAQs

  • I was asked to write a letter of support, how do I submit it? You can send your letter of support to the nominator, to be uploaded directly into the online nomination; or, the nominator can send you a customized link through the online platform that would allow you to upload your letter directly.
  • Can I submit a nomination if I am not an NAS member? Yes, NAS membership is not required to nominate or to be nominated.
  • Can I submit more than one nomination? Yes, you can submit more than one nomination for the same award or for multiple awards. 

Policies

  • Self-nominations are not accepted.
  • Nominators may not nominate individuals from their home institution or anyone with whom they have an emotional relationship (such as a near relative, current/former romantic partner, or former students) with.
  • Joint nominations are discouraged and will only be considered when nominees have collaborated closely — usually in the same laboratory — on the work to be recognized by the award. If nominating an individual(s) for work done with a large collaboration, please clearly explain the reason for nominating those specific people, as well as the reason for excluding other collaborators, if applicable. 
  • NAS membership is not required to nominate or to be nominated.
  • International nominees are eligible for nomination unless explicitly stated otherwise. 
  • NAS Council members are not permitted to submit or support nominations or to be nominated for an award. 
  • Unless otherwise specified, preference will be given to early-career scientists and those whose work has not been recognized by other prizes or awards. 
  • If the award has an age restriction, nominees are considered eligible if they are no older than the restricted age on October 7, 2024. 
  • If the award has a date restriction, nominations are considered eligible if they meet the restriction on October 7, 2024.
