Research Interests
My research addresses problems in science, technology and public policy. Much of my work has involved the development and demonstration of methods to characterize and treat uncertainty in quantitative policy analysis. With Max Henrion I am the author of Uncertainty: A guide to dealing with uncertainty in quantitative risk and policy analysis (Cambridge, 1990). I have addressed a variety of problems in risk assessment (e.g. possible risks from consumer electronics carried on commercial airliners), risk management and risk communication. With Baruch Fischhoff, Ann Bostrom and Cynthia Atman I am the author of Risk Communication: A mental models approach (Cambridge, 2002). For more than a decade I have worked on problems in climate policy, climate change impact assessment, and climate-related to decision-making. I also work on problems in energy technology and policy, focusing in particular on the electricity industry, including strategies and regulations to increase efficiency and limit the emissions of carbon dioxide.
