Using femtosecond lasers, our group first demonstrated optical analogs of the two-dimensional Fourier transform (2D) experiments that have revolutionized nuclear magnetic resonance (e.g. biomolecule structure, magnetic resonance imaging). These experiments combine femtosecond freezing of molecular motion with the correlation signatures of 2D nuclear magnetic resonance. We are actively pursuing the development and application of both 2D electronic and 2D infrared vibrational spectroscopy to structural and dynamical problems in condensed phases.
