Joseph Murray was reconstructive plastic surgeon who performed the first successful kidney transplant in humans. He spent the rest of his career creating new techniques for transplantation and determining the mechanism for organ rejection and prevention. In 1990 the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was jointly awarded to Joseph Murray and E. Donnall Thomas "for their discoveries concerning organ and cell transplantation in the treatment of human disease".
