Research Interests

My laboratory studied the host-virus interactions that determine the outcome of hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infections. In the course of those studies, we elucidated the immune pathogenesis of acute and chronic viral hepatitis and liver cancer, identified the viral targets and immune effectors responsible for viral clearance and liver disease, discovered that antiviral T cells and cells of the innate immune system secrete antiviral cytokines that can purge viruses from infected cells without killing them, and defined the cellular and molecular basis for these novel, immune-mediated, antiviral events.
