Biosketch

C. Y. Cyrus Chu holds a PhD from the University of Michigan (1985), and since then has been a professor at
Academia Sinica and National Taiwan University. He has worked as a researcher and an educator in the field of
economics and social science for more than three decades. He has published several monographs and more
than 100 professional articles in international economics, demography, law and biology journals. From 2011 to
2014, Dr. Chu served as Minister without Portfolio, then Minister of National Science Council, the Executive Yuan
of R.O.C. (Taiwan). From 2008 to 2011, he was the Chairman of Board at Chung-Hwa Institution for Economic
Research. He was elected as an Academician of Academia Sinica in 1998, a Member of TWAS in 2010, and has
been a distinguished research fellow at Academia Sinica since 2000. Dr. Cyrus Chu currently serves as the
Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and
Matsu to the World Trade Organization in Geneva.

Research Interests

C.Y. Cyrus Chu's main research interests are demography, law and economics, as well as family economics. He
has published two monographs, respectively on demography and family economics (both by Oxford University Press), and over 100 professional articles in journals such as American Economic Review; Journal of Political Economy, Demography, Economica; Review of Economics and Statistics, Sociology of Education; Rand Journal of
Economics; Journal of Population Economics; and Journal of Marriage and the Family. He recently joined the
WID team of Thomas Piketty, and study the taxation and wealth-registration individual data of Taiwan.
