Biosketch
I studied at the University of Muenster and received my PhD in 1978 (advisor H.J. Nastold). I spent 1978-79 at Harvard with a stipend from the DFG. Afterwards I became an assistant at the University of Muenster. In 1982 I became full professor at the University of Wuppertal, and then professor at Princeton University in 1985. In 1994 I became a director at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn. I am member of four German academies, and a foreign associate of the Royal Society in London. I received various prizes, including the Fields Medal in 1986.
Research Interests
I am best known for my work in arithmetic geometry. It deals with diophantine equations, that is solutions in integers of polynomial equations. On the side I did work in Arakelov geometry, p-adic Hodge theory, and on moduli spaces.
