Research Interests

My research interest is in specific immunity to viruses. Much of this has been focused on the nature of CD8+ T cell effector function reflecting the discovery, with Rolf Zinkernagel, that this class of lymphocytes reacts to modified transplantation glycoproteins on the surface of infected cells. Current experiments concentrate on the localized, transient respiratory disease caused by the influenza A viruses and the persistent infectious process associated with gamma herpesviruses. The use of appropriate mouse models allows the dissection of both the parts played by the various cellular components of the specific host response and the nature of immune memory. Efforts are being made to develop appropriate vaccination and immunotherapy protocols, particularly for gamma herpesviruses. Apart from possible practical considerations, a continuing theme is to understand the nature of homeostasis in this diffuse organ system.
