Biosketch
Subra Suresh became the ninth president of Carnegie Mellon University in July 2013. In recognition of his pioneering research, he has been elected a member of all three National Academies (the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine) and the American Academy of Arts Sciences and the National Academy of Inventors. He is the first and only university president to hold this distinction. Nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Suresh served as director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2010 to 2013. At NSF, he led the creation of the Innovation Corps, the Global Research Council, and the Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide initiative. Prior to NSF, Suresh was Dean and Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research into the properties of engineered and biological materials, and their connections to human diseases, has been published in more than 300 research articles, 25 patent applications and three books. This inventions and his start-up company have shaped many disciplines and technologies at the intersections of engineering, sciences and medicine.
