Research Interests

My research is in ecology, with emphasis on the structure and function of nature: how does the world work as a biophysical system and how can we keep it working? Studies include biotic influences on the warming of the earth, especially the role of forests as both cause and effect; biotic energy fluxes, biotic impoverishment and biotic integrity, and the ecological cycling and effects of toxic substances, including ionizing radiation. Collateral interests deal with defining and defending the public interest in details of a world that will continue to work as a long-term human habitat.
