Biosketch

Graduated Union College (BS) 1963, Harvard Medical School (M.D.) 1967, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (M.H.S.) 1973, with residency training in Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology. My research has focused on the epidemiology of blindness and blindness prevention, and childhood nutrition and mortality, having lived and worked in East Pakistan/Bangladesh and Indonesia.  Currently serving as University Distinguished Service Professor at Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Public Health(having been on the faculty of both schools since 1980), and Dean Emeritus (having served as Dean 1990-2005) of the Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Amongst other awards, received the 1997 Lasker Clinical Research Award. Presently serve on the Board of Directors of the Lasker Foundation, and the Bloomberg Philanthropies, and chair the Champalimaud Vision Science Award Jury.

Research Interests

Currently funded research is focused on the implementation, sustainability, and outcomes of eye care services in low and middle income countries.
