Research Interests

As an electrical engineer who has worked in the field of signal processing for over thirty years, I have conducted research in a wide range of areas of speech and image processing. My PhD research at MIT in the early 1960s was on speech synthesis; my initial research studies at AT&T Bell Labs were in speech analysis and speech coding, and my interest for the past twenty years has been primarily in speech and speaker recognition. For the past six years, I have also concentrated some of my time in looking at problems in image and video coding, as well as in image recognition for document reading and face location for low bit rate videophones. I have also done extensive work in the theory of digital signal processing, especially in the areas of filter design, spectrum analysis, and multirate signal processing.
