Research Interests

I am an analytical chemist interested in new ways to measure chemical phenomena using electrochemistry and electron transfer chemistry. Electrochemistry involves interfacial processes. We have a long-standing interest in rational control and design of the chemistry of such processes by attaching electroactive molecules and thin polymeric films to electrode surfaces, which are called chemically modified electrodes. Recent efforts center on controlling the structural and spatial organization of electrode-attached chemicals. Structural organization allows investigation of the distance and molecular orientation dependence of electron transfer reactions and other chemical events. A related direction exploits metal cluster chemistry to form monolayers on nanometer sized collections of gold atoms. Our research interests include electron transfer dynamics in semi-solid and solid state redox media. The objectives are to attain an understanding of the microscopic environmental details of an electron donor-acceptor reaction that rivals that known in fluid media.
