Research Interests

As a condensed-matter physicist, I have been working on the transport properties of lower dimensional electron systems, such as quantum sheets, quantum wires, and quantum dots. These consist typically of thin layers of semiconductors grown with atomic precision in ultra-high vacuum by molecular beam epitaxy. Lithographic techniques are used to shape them after growth. Two-dimensional systems placed at low temperatures in a high magnetic field show bizarre quantum phenomena, such as the integral and fractional quantum Hall effect, both of which I have studied extensively. In general, my interests are best described by "making and studying individual small things on the atomic scale."
