Election of NAS Home Secretary and Councilors

WASHINGTON – The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has elected a home secretary and four members to serve on its governing Council. All terms begin July 1, 2023.

Nancy C. Andrews has been elected to serve a four-year term as the Academy’s home secretary, succeeding Susan R. Wessler. Andrews is executive vice president and chief scientific officer of Boston Children's Hospital. As home secretary, she will oversee the Academy’s membership activities, including the nomination and election of members, efforts to diversify the membership, the process for selecting NAS award recipients, and the organization of the NAS annual meeting. She will serve as the secretary of the Academy's 17-member governing Council.

The NAS Council is the board of directors of the organization and comprises five elected officers and 12 additional members, four of whom are elected each year. Councilors elected to three-year terms beginning July 1 are: Katherine H. Freeman, Evan Pugh University Professor, Department of Geosciences, Pennsylvania State University; Mary Lou Guerinot, Ronald and Deborah Harris Professor in the Sciences, Department of Biological Sciences, Dartmouth College; Carol L. Prives, DaCosta Professor of Biology, Department of Biological Sciences, Columbia University; and Michael S. Witherell, laboratory director, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The new councilors succeed Nancy C. Andrews, Ruth S. DeFries, Joseph S. Francisco, and Gertrud M. Schüpbach.

The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and — with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine — provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.
