Deciphering the Origins of AIDS and Malaria

The human AIDS pandemic is caused by a lentivirus (HIV-1) that naturally infects chimpanzees, while the most severe form of human malaria is caused by a parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) that originated in gorillas. In this talk, Dr. Beatrice Hahn describes how these two important human pathogens were traced to their original African ape hosts and what was learned about the circumstances, reasons, and requirements of their emergence.
