Microbial Oceanography

Research Statement

The fundamental objective of my research is to develop an enhanced and mechanistic understanding of the chemical and biological processes that define the fluxes, standing stocks and productivity of the oceanic component of Earth?s climate system. My research skill set and interests are broad, ranging from measurement of nutrient uptake kinetics to molecular characterization of organic matter to bio-optical determinations of community structure and productivity, to quantitative assessments of the environmental forcing of discrete types of phytoplankton blooms (from N2 fixing organisms to harmful algal blooms). Fundamentally, my research is motivated by the recognition that microorganisms largely control the concentrations, distribution and molecular composition of chemical resources in the ocean.
