Research Statement

My main line of research is in quantum information theory, a new field of study that asks what new kinds of communication theoretic tasks can we perform by using quantum systems as information carriers, rather than classical mechanical systems. A wonderful example of something that can be done, via the use of quantum systems, is quantum cryptography --- i.e., absolutely secure communication between two parties who have never met previously. Another good example is the phenomenon known as quantum teleportation. Neither of these tasks can be performed with classical physics.
