Research Statement

Dr. Claudia Benitez-Nelson graduated with a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute Joint Program in 1999. She currently serves as Director of the Marine Science Program and is a Professor in the Department of Earth & Ocean Sciences at the University of South Carolina. Her research focuses on understanding mechanisms that influence the formation and sinking of particles in coastal ocean environments, and the role that particles play in nutrient biogeochemistry and harmful algal bloom toxin transport. Current research focuses on developing new methods for elucidating phosphorus speciation in marine systems.
