Memories are initially vulnerable until they undergo a process of consolidation into long-term storage. An exciting discovery in animals showed that upon retrieval, old memories become labile again and undergo a re-storage process termed reconsolidation. Reconsolidation thus provides a window of opportunity to change old memories, which might be useful especially in cases of traumatic memories. My research examines reconsolidation in the human brain and ways to change old memories using non-invasive and pharmacological techniques.
