What are the common features of the nonequilibrium dynamics of granular systems? To attempt to answer this question, experimental results for the dynamics of superconducting vortices are compared with the predictions of a simple coarse-grained "sandpile" model. The model is shown to have predictive power for the mesoscopic dynamics of vortices, which can then be related to dynamics other granular systems. Another project studies the development of self-organization in simple models of game-playing dynamical networks. A remarkable tendency for scale-free behavior to develop is discovered.
