Research Statement
Miaki Ishii is a seismologist whose interest includes both earthquakes and subsurface structure. Earth's deep interior can be investigated using different types of seismic data all the way down to the center of the inner core. Alternatively, hundreds of seismic recordings from relatively small regions (e.g., 800 seismograms from all over Japan), can be focused back to the earthquake source and provide a detailed view of the rupture propagation during giant earthquakes.
