Antoine Georges is a theoretical physicist with a broad range of interests in quantum many-body physics, quantum materials with strong electronic correlations, ultra-cold atomic gases, computational physics and statistical physics. Dr Georges is a professor at the Collège de France, where he holds the chair of Condensed Matter Physics. He is also the founding director of the Center for Computational Quantum Physics at the Flatiron Institute of the Simons Foundation in New York and has affiliations to École Polytechnique and the University of Geneva. He graduated from École Polytechnique and earned his PhD from École Normale Supérieure and Université Paris-Sud in 1988. From 1989 to 1991 he was a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University. He was a CNRS researcher until 2009 and a professor at École Polytechnique until 2017. Dr Georges is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and of Academia Europaea. He has received several international distinctions such as the 2006 Europhysics Condensed Matter Prize (for `The development and application of dynamical mean-field theory’), the Silver Medal of CNRS, the 2014 Hamburg Prize for Theoretical Physics, the 2020 Aneesur Rahman Prize of the American Physical Society and the 2022 Feenberg Memorial Medal for Quantum Many-Body Theory.
Research Interests
Dr Georges' research focuses on the physics of many-particle interacting quantum systems. This includes materials with strong electron correlations (such as transition-metal and rare-earth compounds or two-dimensional narrow band systems) as well as ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices. With his research team, Dr Georges develops analytical and computational methods to understand these systems. He is best known for being one of the co-inventors of `Dynamical Mean-Field Theory', a quantum embedding method which has transformed our understanding of the physical properties and electronic structure of materials with strong electronic correlations. Dr Georges also made contributions to statistical physics and the physics of disordered systems.
