Biosketch
Ferenc Krausz graduated in electrical engineering, completed studies in theoretical physics (Budapest, Hungary, 1985), and earned a doctorate in laser physics (Vienna, 1991). He first became professor at the Technische Universität Wien (1998), then appointed director at the MPQ and chair of experimental physics at the LMU (2003-2004). More recently, he became the founding director of CMF (2019) and appointed chair of laser physics at the University of Hong Kong (2025). In a series of experiments (Vienna, 2001-2004) his team generated and measured attosecond-duration light and used it for capturing sub-atomic motions in real time. He established Attoworld (attoworld.de) for gaining insight into processes occuring “at the bottom” and later (2015) turned his attention to developing methods and concepts for cost-effective probing of human health. Ferenc Krausz has been awarded the King-Faisal International Prize for Science (2013), the Wolf-Prize in Physics (2022), the BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award (2023), and the Nobel Prize in Physics (2023).
