Gunther Uhlmann was born in Quillota, Chile, in 1952. He obtained the Licenciatura degree in Mathematics at the Universidad de Chile in 1973 and the PhD at MIT under the direction of Victor Guillemin in 1976. He had postdoctoral positions at Harvard, MIT and the Courant Institute. In 1980 he became Assistant Professor at MIT. In 1984 he was appointed Associate Professor at the Universidad of Washington in Seattle where he has been since. He is currently the Robert R. and Elaine F. Phelps Endowed Professor.
Uhlmann has received several honors for his research including a Sloan Fellowship in 1984 and a Guggenheim fellowship in 2001. In 2001 he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences. He has been a Fellow of the Institute of Physics since 2004. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009 and a SIAM Fellow in 2010. He was an Invited Speaker at ICM in Berlin in 1998 and a Plenary Speaker at International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Zurich in 2007. He was named a Clay Senior Scholar at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) at Berkeley in the Fall of 2010. In Fall 2010 he held the Chancellor Professorship at UC Berkeley. He was named a Highly Cited Researcher by ISI in 2004. He was awarded the Bôcher Memorial Prize in 2011 and the Kleinman Prize also in 2011. In Fall 2011 he was a Rothschild Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, UK. Uhlmann delivered the American Mathematical Society Einstein Lecture in 2012.
Research Interests
Uhlmann's main interest is in inverse problems. In these problems one attempts to determine the internal properties of a medium by making measurements outside the medium. Inverse problems arise in many fields of science including medical imaging, geophysics, cosmology, material science, biology etc. In order to investigate these problems Uhlmann uses methods of several fields of Mathematics including partial differential equations, micro-local analysis, harmonic analysis, differential geometry and others.
