Research Interests
Over the last decade I have worked mainly in the design of self-timed or asynchronous computer circuits. I see this design approach as a way to get more performance out of modern integrated circuits by letting each part of a circuit chip progress at its own pace. The design of asynchronous circuits proves remarkably difficult because the signals can change in any order and we must be sure that all such orders produce acceptable behavior. Computer architecture is also of interest to me. As in all fields of architecture, the design of computers must match both their uses as well as the potential of the materials in them. The continuing revolution in integrated circuits offers major challenges to the design of computing systems. I retain an interest in computer graphics, a field in which I used to be active.
