Biosketch

Jeffrey C. Lagarias is the Harold Mead Stark Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He earned his S.B., S. M. and PhD. in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined Bell Laboratories in 1974, and worked there and at its descendants, A. T. & Bell Labs and A. T. & T. Labs-Research, until 2004, first in the Business Analysis and Systems Center and later in the Mathematics Research Center. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan as a Professor in 2004. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). He has been a Simons Fellow, a Clay Senior Scholar and a Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellow.

Research Interests

Dr. Lagarias' work in mathematics and related fields includes contributions in algebraic number theory, analytic number theory, computational complexity theory, cryptography, diophantine approximation, discrete and computational geometry, dynamical systems, ergodic theory, harmonic analysis, mathematical physics, operations research, optimization, packing and tiling, quasicrystals, theoretical computer science, and wavelets and fractals.
