Marcella Frangipane

Marcella Frangipane is Full Professor of Prehistory and has taught Prehistory and Protohistory of the Near East and Strategies and Methods of Archaeological Research at the Sapienza University of Rome. She is also member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (Italy), of the Deutsches Archäologische Institut in Berlin and the Archaeological Institute of America. She is the author of 176 publications, among which 6 books. She has been the Editor in Chief of the journal Origini and the Series Studi di Preistoria Orientale (SPO) of Sapienza University. She is currently the Editor of the monograph Series “Arslantepe”. She has participated in field research in Mexico, Italy, Egypt and Turkey, becoming field vice-director of the Sapienza excavations at Maadi (Egypt), and the director of the Italian Archaeological Project at Arslantepe and Zeytinli Bahçe (Turkey). The Arslantepe Project has been the core of her research activity and interests, which focus on the rise of hierarchical societies, early centralised economies, bureaucracy, urbanization and the State in the Ancient Near East, particularly Mesopotamia and Anatolia. She has received the Discovery Award by the Shanghai Archaeology Forum; the Vittorio De Sica Prize for Science; and Rotondi Prize to Art Saviors. She has also received the honorary PhD by the University of Malatya (Turkey) and the title of Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana.
