Martin Fejer is an applied physicist recognized for his work on nonlinear and guided-wave optics. He is known particularly for the development of microstructured ferroelectrics and semiconductors and the theoretical description of quasi-phasematched nonlinear interactions, which have become the basis for a large class of classical and quantum optical devices. Fejer was born in Chicago, and grew up outside of Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in Physics, and from Stanford University in 1986 with a Ph.D. in Applied Physics, and joined the Applied Physics faculty there that same year. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the Optical Society of America and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
