Biosketch
Norman Sleep was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He attended Parchment Michigan Public Schools graduating in 1963. He graduated from Michigan State in Mathematics in 1967. He then enrolled in the Geophysics Department of MIT. He received masters degree in 1969 and PhD in 1973. He was briefly post-doc at MIT. He was Assistant Professor of Geology at Northwestern from 1973 to 1979. He joined the Geophysics Department of Stanford University in 1979 and has been a member of the Department since then. He will have emeritus status after April 1, 2021.
Research Interests
His current research involves application of geodynamics and geochemistry to astrobiology including conditions on the early Earth and Mars. He continues to be interested in the nonlinear seismology of strong body and surface waves. The work includes nonlinear interaction of different seismic wave types.
