Biosketch
Richard Borcherds is a professor of mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley. He was born in Cape Town, South Africa and grew up in Birmingham, England. He graduated from Cambridge University with a B.A. and PhD in mathematics, followed by a research fellowship at Trinity College. He held postdoctoral positions at Berkeley and Cambridge. He has been on the faculty at Berkeley since 1993, apart from 3 years as a Royal Society research professor at Cambridge from 1996 to 1999.
Research Interests
Richard Borcherds's research interests include the "monstrous moonshine" conjectures relating sporadic simple groups and modular functions, and the connections with vertex algebras, hyperbolic reflection groups, and Kac-Moody algebras. He has also worked on automorphic forms that can be written as infinite products.
