Research Interests
Malinow has examined the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying activity-driven synaptic plasticity. He has combined electrophysiological, molecular and imaging techniques to elucidate how synapses are modified during plasticity. He has focused on the rules governing the trafficking of glutamate receptors in and out of the synapse. He has demonstrated that synaptic incorporation of glutamate receptors occurs during learning paradigms. More recently he has examined synaptic and circuit abnormalities that may underlie diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and major depression.
