Sergiu Hart is the Alice Kusiel and Kurt Vorreuter University Professor Emeritus, Professor Emeritus of Economics, and Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Hart studied Mathematics and Statistics at Tel Aviv University, where he received his B.Sc. in 1970, M.Sc. in 1971, and Ph.D. in 1976. His previous appointments were at Stanford University and Tel Aviv University, with visiting positions at Harvard University. Hart’s research interests and contributions are mainly in game theory and economic theory, with additional contributions in mathematics, probability and statistics, and computer science. He was the Founding Director, from 1991 to 1999, of the Center for the Study of Rationality at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a highly multidisciplinary world-leading institute that brings together researchers from more than a dozen different disciplines. Sergiu Hart is a Member of the Israel National Academy of Sciences—where he is currently serving as Chair of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division—a Member of Academia Europaea, and an International Honorary Member of The American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and a Charter Member and Fellow of the Game Theory Society. He has served as President of the Game Theory Society and of the Israeli Mathematical Union. Sergiu Hart was awarded the Rothschild Prize in the Social Sciences and the Israel Prize in Economics and Statistics.

Research Interests

My main research interests are in the areas of game theory—the study of situations with multiple participants, be they individuals, institutions, collectives, or even genes, whose decisions affect one another—and economic theory. I have aimed to understand interactions from rational and strategic viewpoints, using formal mathematical approaches and striving for simple foundations and constructs. More recently I have been working in the interface between computer science, economics, and game theory, on issues of implementing desired group outcomes by providing appropriate individual incentives.
