W. Hugh Woodin, PhD is Professor of Philosophy and of Mathematics at Harvard University. He earned his BS in Mathematics from Caltech and his PhD in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the NAS. Awards include a Sloan Research Fellowship, a Senior Humboldt Fellowship, the Carol Karp Prize of the Association of Symbolic Logic, and the Hausdorff Medal of the European Set Theory Society.

Research Interests

Dr. Woodin's research seeks to clarify the understanding of Set Theory with the goal of identifying and validating the missing formal axioms known to be necessary, for obtaining answers to problems such as that of Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis (and many others) which cannot be answered based on just the accepted ZFC axioms of Set Theory. The investigation inevitably involves addressing key issues of mathematical infinity and mathematical truth.
