Yonggang Huang is a mechanician recognized for his work on the mechanics of materials and structures. He is known particularly for his studies on mechanics of stretchable electronics, deterministic 3D assembly, and microscale plasticitiy theory. Yonggang was born in Beijing, China. He graduated from Peking University (China) in 1984 with a B.S. in mechanics, and from Harvard University in 1987 with a S.M. and in 1990 with a Ph.D., both in engineering sciences. He was a postdoctoral fellow in engineering sciences at Harvard University, and joined the faculty at University of Arizona in 1991, Michigan Technological University in 1995, University of Illinois in 1998, and Northwestern University in 2007. He was the President of the Society of Engineering Sciences in 2014, and the Chair of the Applied Mechanics Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers 2019-2020. He is is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering.
Research Interests
Yonggang Huang is interested in mechanics of materials and structures. He has established the scientific foundations for stretchable electronics and for mechanics-guided deterministic 3D assembly, and has made important contributions to their applications to bio-integrated and bio-inspired electronics, and 3D fabrication. He is also one of the key contributors to the microscale plasticity theory.
